Mini’app’les Meeting, Tuesday Mar 15 at 7:00 p.m., Q&A at 6:30 p.m.

March 12, 2016 by Tim Drenk

The next Mini’app’les meeting is Tuesday, March 15th, the third Tuesday of the month, at the Hackfactory (3119 E. 26th Street Minneapolis, MN 55406). At 6:30 p.m., members of the board and other knowledgable people will be available if you have specific questions you would like answered. We will do our best to address your question and help you troubleshoot the issue.

After talking about some of the current news, we look at security at 7:00 p.m.. We will look at different options for securing your Mac & iOS device, how to stay safe (or at least safer) when connecting to someone else’s network, and talk about questions such as “Do I need to run an anti-virus program?”, “What is ransomware?”, and “What do I do when I can’t get a Safari window to close?”

While there is no need to think that every WiFi network has been compromised and every USB charger is going to steal info from our device, we do need to be aware of the security issues and be able make informed decisions of how we protect our information.

We look forward to seeing you there.

20% off of $50 and $100 iTunes gift cards at Staples

January 19, 2016 by Tim Drenk

One of the best ways to say a little money on the iTunes stores is to buy discounted gift cards. Today, Staples is selling the $50 iTunes gift card for $40 and the $100 iTunes gift card for $80 with free shipping. According to the product info page, the sale will last till Jan 23rd. I have known these sales to end early. If you buy anything through the iTunes stores, pick one or more of these gift cards up and enjoy a 20% discount on your next app purchase.

Mini’app’les Meeting, Tuesday Jan 19 at 7:00 p.m., Q&A at 6:30 p.m.

January 18, 2016 by Tim Drenk

The next Mini’app’les meeting is Tuesday, January 19th, the third Tuesday of the month, at the Hackfactory (3119 E. 26th Street Minneapolis, MN 55406). At 6:30 p.m., members of the board and other knowledgable people will be available if you have specific questions you would like answered. We will do our best to address your question and help you troubleshoot the issue.

At 7:00 p.m., we will look at using iOS devices for maps and navigation. Yes, Siri can easily get you to someplace just by asking. “Give me directions to the nearest coffee shop” for example. Or “give me directions home”. But what if you want to create a GPS trail, or go hiking with topo map, or want to see gas prices along your route? Fortunately there are other options out there for you than just the built-in Maps app. A few different Mini’app’les members will share their experience with solving these and other navigation tasks.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Mini’app’les Meeting, Tuesday Dec 15 at 7:00 p.m., Q&A at 6:30 p.m.

December 15, 2015 by Tim Drenk

The next Mini’app’les meeting is Tuesday, December 15th, the third Tuesday of the month, at the Hackfactory (3119 E. 26th Street Minneapolis, MN 55406). At 6:30 p.m., members of the board and other knowledgable people will be available if you have specific questions you would like answered. We will do our best to address your question and help you troubleshoot the issue.

At 7:00 p.m., we will look at the new feature (or perhaps the return of the feature) of extensions for Photos. When Apple discontinued iPhotos and Aperture and introduced Photos, Photos didn’t have some of the features that Aperture users were used to using. One of those was extensions, which users were able to add to Aperture to expand its capabilities. With 10.11, Apple added that option to Photos. We will cover a number of useful extensions for Photos and what they add to editing pictures within photos.

We look forward to seeing you there.
